Fishing Lake Ontario

Casting spoons from the shore line for Spring Brown trout

In the spring of the year any time after the ice has left the lake ontario shore line you can catch browns right from shore by casting heavy spoons for them. Casting spoons on light tackle is an exciting way to fool marauding bands of football browns. After the ice has left the Lake the warmest water is usually found close to shore and normally it is where a creek or river empties into the lake. We like heavy spoons because they will cast the farest and when they are retrieved they will stay in the strike zone the longest. Some of the spoons used for this are Acme's Little Cleo or Kastmasters and Lure Jensen's Krocodile. The spoon colors that I like are sliver/green, silver/blue, and silver/orange or red. Some likely places with easy access in Oswego County are as follows. The beach at Deer Creek Wildlife Management Area. The mouth of the Salmon river. The Beach at Selkirk State Park. The Mexico Point State boat launch on the North side of the Little Salmon River or the Mexico Town Park on the South side of the Little Salmon River. Last but not least is the Oswego River and Harbor where you can fish from the linear parks on both the east and west sides of the Oswego River, a place locally know as Big Rock which is located behind Old Fort Ontario and is accessible by a footpath from a hill top parking lot down a steep embankment to the shore, and the public docks at wright's landing on the west side of the harbor. You can catch spring browns at all of these locations , altho on any given day you might have to hunt around a little to find the best fishing.
